Susan (Steiding) Baker

January 14, 1948 ~ October 3, 2019 (age 71)

Susan Steiding “Susie” Baker, 71, of Frostburg, passed away on Thursday, October 3, 2019 at Western Maryland Regional Medical Center with loved ones at her side.

Susan was born on January 14, 1948, to the late John and Virginia (Mason) Steiding. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Victor D. Baker; two brothers, Robert and Richard Steiding; and a sister, Ann M. Spataro.

Mrs. Baker graduated from Valley High School in 1966 and earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree and Master of Arts Degree from Frostburg State College. She later returned to FSU and obtained a certification in Computer Science.

During her career of over thirty years as an educator in the Allegany County Public School System, Mrs. Baker taught both Art and Computer Science.  While teaching at Beall High School, where she spent the majority of her career, she co-founded the first school web page and served as its Graphic Design Advisor.  She also coordinated annual student art shows.  She also opened the Art Department at Mt. Ridge High School prior to her retirement.  As an active member of the Allegany County Teachers Association, she served as an officer for many years.  Susan also worked at JoAnn Fabrics.

Susan was a lifetime member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Midland and was the organist/pianist there for several years.  She was a talented quilter and a member of the Creative Needles quilting group.  As an avid gardener, she maintained a municipal flower basket on Main Street, Frostburg and enjoyed gardening at home.  She was always happy to help out when needed and for many years made Halloween costumes for the children of family and friends.

She is survived by her son Eric Baker and special friend Paula Wegman; granddaughter, Alethea Green; brother in law, Mike Spataro and his son, Lance; sister in law, Kaye Steiding and her sons, John and Scott Steiding; brother in law, Steve Baker and his wife Adelina and their son, Sean; sister in law, Nancy Martens and her family.

In accordance with her wishes, Susan was cremated.

A memorial service will be held at the Grace United Methodist Church in Midland at 2 pm on Sunday, October 13, 2019 with Rev. Heerak Kim officiating.

In lieu of flowers the family would like donations to be made to the Art Department of Mt. Ridge High School in her name.
