Buck V May Jr.

Buck was born March 22, 1956 to the late Dayton V. May Sr. and late Pearl (Fletcher) Shanholtz. Buck was one of Dayton and Pearl's 7 children and was preceded in death by his sisters Gloria (Barthalow) Johnson, Patricia Hoopengardner, Shirley Lanehart, brother Gary May and survived by his sisters Joyce Crabtree (Ronnie ) and Darlene (Williams) Bitner (Kevin). Buck spent his early childhood growing up in Flintstone, MD, later moved to Cumberland and graduated from Fort Hill High School in 1975. In June of 1975 Danny Lee May was born and Buck became a father for the first time.

Buck met the love of his life, Eileen Scott, at a red traffic light on Baltimore Street in Cumberland. He was immediately smitten, proposed in Ocean City and not even a year later on November 10, 1978 they were married. Eileen and Buck enjoyed going to dinner with their Friday Night Crew and going to Car shows in their 1963 Chevy Duce Coupe that he affectionately named "Sweet Eileen" or his 1966 Chevy Truck with their Cruise Crew.

In December of 1979 Buck and Eileen welcomed their first daughter, Jennifer Eileen May. Then in October of 1985 they finally gave Jennifer a beautiful black haired sister, Jonelle Elaine May. Buck was not the typical girl dad. He instilled Jennifer and Jonelle with the skills and confidence to be self-reliant teaching them how to problem solve, shoot a gun, ride a 4-wheeler, bait a hook, drive a stick shift, finish drywall, appreciate and work on cars, build things, and uphold old school values. He offered sound advice including "always carry a pocket knife," "you were looking for a job when you found that one" "don't eat yellow snow" and "plant your corn early, " "you don't know unless you try," and "it's ok to fail."

Buck worked for Klopper Oil, was a member of the Carpenters Local and the Cumberland Outdoor Club.

Buck found great honor and joy in being not only Isaiah's Granddaddy but also his best friend. Granddaddy taught Isaiah everything he knows about cars, building things and what it means to be a good man. Lilianah Grace was his only granddaughter, his girl, his Lilibug. Granddaddy bragged that his granddaughter was in nursing school and she took great pride in caring for him throughout his illness. Makiah Jayton was bestowed the moniker of "Mad Dog" by his Granddaddy who loved listening to him play his guitar. Eliah was Granddaddy's little helper and always welcomed an extra set of hand even when the help made the job take longer. Jaziah and his Granddaddy had a special bond and Jaziah plans to become a scientist, do experiments, and create an antidote for his Granddaddy's cancer. Ezariah aka little Bucky was his Granddaddy's snuggle and nap buddy. Pappy loved watching Danny "Bubba" play football and watching him grow into a good man. In May 2026 Danny II and wife Addi made Pap a great grandfather with the arrival of their son, Dane May. Gage was his Pap's gentle giant. Pappy Buck was anxiously awaiting the upcoming September wedding of his grandson, Jace to his beautiful bride to be Maci McKinley. Pap was so incredibly proud when Jace graduated the Maryland State Police Academy and bragged that his grandson was a MD State Trooper. Buck enjoyed spending time just hang out with his Bonus Grandson John Blank and just "shoot'n the breeze." He was also in awe of Jessica Blank, his Bonus Granddaughter and her work with animatronics and digital design.

On August 1st 2026 Isaiah and his fiancé Abby revealed that they were bestowing Granddaddy with the highest honor of their son being his namesake with his middle name being Dayton. Granddaddy fought hard to hang on with the anticipation of the birth of his namesake in December 2026.

Buck was blessed with and survived by two amazing son- in- laws, Philip Deavers (Jonelle) and Jeffrey T. Blank (Jenn). Buck, Jeff and Philip shared a love of old cars and old school values.

Buck was blessed with too many friends to name. However, Buck and Roger Helmstetter were lifelong friends and each other's go to source for sarcasm, frequent digs, and automotive support. The family would like to thank Buck's "old buddy, old pal," James Plummer. Over the years he has been a devoted friend and in the last four years has quietly relieved Buck of the physical tasks that his illness no long allowed him to do.

Buck was preceded in death by his loving mother in law, Jennie Lee Scott; father in law, James Scott Jr. and Eileen's sister, Margret "Peggy" Kreger. Buck is survived by his loving wife Eileen of 48 years, his 3 children, 11 Grandchildren, one great Grandson, daughter in law, Shelley May (Danny), Brother-in-laws Randy Johnson (Gloria) and Steve Kreger (Peggy). Buck is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Buck fought a painfully but quite journey with cancer. On August 27, 2026 Buck passed peacefully at home surrounded by his family after a 4 year battle with Cancer.

Buck's family will welcome family and friends to visit on August 31st from 6:00pm-9:00pm at God's Ark of Safety in Frostburg, MD. His Celebration of Life will be on September 1st, at God's Ark of Safety beginning at 12:00pm, with visitation beginning at 11:00am.
