Dolores Carter

April 4, 1944 — August 17, 2025

Dolores Elaine "Snooks" Carter, 81, of Frostburg, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 17, 2025 at UPMC Western MD after a hard-fought battle with cancer.

Known to family and friends as "Snooks," she was born April 4, 1944 to the late Roy and Teresa Garlitz of Avilton. She was also preceded in death by husband's Michael Hersick and Bernard "Bunny" Carter; a brother Roy Garlitz, Jr.; and a sister-in-law, Lynda Garlitz.

Snooks is survived by her loving and caring companion of 14 years, Lee Wilt, Frostburg, MD; her brother, Carl Garlitz, Cumberland, MD; her sister, Rita Bonner, Frostburg, MD; and her beloved cat, Tannie.

Even though Snooks was loved by many family members she will be deeply missed by special nieces Tina (Brian) Warnick, Avilton, MD and Amy (Marty) Dunnington, Conway, SC, whom even though they called her Aunt she was always more like a second Mom and she cherished them as daughter's; great-niece, Randi Stafford, Denver, CO whom she shared a special bond with; great-nephews Trevor (Amber) Warnick, Grantsville, MD and their sons Cayden and Easton; Matthew (Priscilla) Dunnington, Round Hill, VA and children Victor, Clayton and Isabella; Garrett (Hannah) Appel, Cumberland, MD and the recent birth of their daughter, Jane, whom she adored beyond measure.

Snooks was a 1962 graduate of Valley High School and previously worked at Footers Cleaners. She was Catholic by faith and a member of the Divine Mercy Parish, St. Michael's in Frostburg, past President of the Midland Ladies Auxiliary and past Captain of the Frostburg Shuffleboard League.

Snooks took pride in her flower gardens, was an avid bingo player, enjoyed trips to the casino and made the world's best meatball subs and homemade noodles.

Friends and family will be received at Durst Funeral Home, 57 Frost Avenue, Frostburg on Thursday, August 21, 2025 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. with a vigil service being held at 7:00 p.m.

Funeral liturgy will be held at Durst Funeral Home on Friday, August 22, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. with Deacon Harold Bradley Officiating. Interment will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, Midland, MD.
