Ethel Jane Warren Sloop was born on September 19th, 1933, in Martinsville, Virginia and peacefully passed to her Lord on January 24, 2024 in Dunedin, Florida.
Jane was raised an only child, growing up in a furniture factory town in southern Virginia with her parents and closely surrounded by a large extended family. She attended Martinsville High where she excelled at academics and enjoyed her role as head majorette on the twirling team. She was known for her diligent academic focus and her forever sunny disposition. While Jane was interested in attending college, it was seemingly not possible at that time. Several of her High School teachers independently reached out to James Madison College, prepped her application, and presented her with the opportunity to attend college. She confirmed their belief in her, becoming a high performing student. Early during her junior year at college, she met the love of her life, Richard C. Sloop, Sr of Harrisonburg, VA. They were inseparable throughout their final time at James Madison. The two graduated and were married in 1955 and had their first child, Richard in 1958, followed by Camilla Jane in 1960.
Dick & Jane made the move to western Maryland in 1961 and soon thereafter purchased their first family home in Frostburg, MD where they raised the two children. While the children were still young, Jane began working as a teacher at Allegany High School in Cumberland MD. She taught business classes and mentored the typing team retiring after 35 years of teaching in 1996.
Jane was always her husband’s biggest supporter. One standout example was laboring for days, editing, and manually typing Dick’s multi volume doctorial thesis. He referred to this effort as ‘our’ doctorate, always sharing her involvement at every opportunity. Following this academic effort with Dick’s full support, she returned to JMU part time and secured her master’s degree.
Jane was a do-er outside of the Family as well. While working full time, she had active roles St. Paul’s Lutheran Church serving on various committees and the choir, she volunteered as a Den Master for Cub Scouts, as well as chaperoning for the Beall High Belles. She also regularly helped with her husband’s sponsorship of the Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity, becoming an important part of every fraternity event, and providing support and caring for each of the boys. These boys still remember and honor her with regular communications and updates on their lives.
Jane enjoyed Bridge, playing in several Bridge clubs locally. Her knowledge of cards also extended to Canasta and was always ready to teach the game, as well as ‘punish’ all comers. Blessed with culinary skills she enjoyed hosting dinner parties at their home where neighbors always vied for invitations. Her ginger snaps are still talked about in hushed tones. Jane also enjoyed travel and pulled her reluctant husband to the Caribbean and Europe several times in their life. She cherished each of these unique experiences with her soulmate. Her devotion to “Dick’ remained unwavering for her entire life. She was a loving mother, perfect partner, and everyone’s biggest cheerleader.
Surviving Jane are her two children, Richard Carlton Sloop Jr. and his wife Tanya, of Dunedin FL, and Camilla Jane Myers and husband David, of Fort Ashby, W.Va. Grandchildren are Warren Conrad Sloop, Savannah Lee Sloop, Blake Ashley Myers and his fiancé Samantha, Brooke Whitney Jones and her husband Shaun.
