Gerard Joseph “Mac” McGann, 84, of Mt. Savage, passed away on Saturday, January 31, 2026, at Lions Rehab Peace Health Care.
Born May 9, 1941, he was the son of the late George DeSales McGann and Dorcas Elizabeth (Lashley)McGann. In addition to his parents, he is preceded by his sisters, Mary Agnes (Jack) Garmer and Lee Anna(Paul) Gaughan; sister-in-law Ester McGann; niece Mary Francis Garmer; and son-in-law, Jeffrey McKenzie.
Gerard was a graduate of Mt. Savage High School. Gerard was employed by Kelly-Springfield Tire Co. for 25 years and was a member of the fire brigade for the plant. He then went on to drive school buses for 10years, and he did security work for Shaffer Ford, Cumberland. Gerard was most proud of his service to his community and the fire service. Gerard was a life member of the Mt. Savage Volunteer Fire Dept., having served for 66 years. As a member of the Mt. Savage Fire Dept., he served as president for 15 years. He served on many committees; his proudest committees were for the purchase of the 1971 Diamond Rio fire engine and for the building of the new fire station. As a member of a volunteer fire department, it is impossible to list all the duties and capacities in which a member participates, but Gerard did as much as anyone could. Being a member of the FD allowed Gerard to serve Allegany County as the president and vice-president of the Allegany-Garrett Counties Fire and Rescue Association. Gerard also served as president and vice-president of the Allegany-Garrett County Chapter of the A. Mike Walters Christian Firefighters. He was also a delegate to the State of Maryland Firemen’s Association and a member of it’s safety committee.Gerard further served Allegany County as a 20-year member of the Allegany County Sheriff’s Dept. Fire Police, having served as vice-president.
Surviving are his children, Anna Dugan and husband, Ron, Marilyn McKenzie, and Brian McGann;grandchildren, Jarrett McKenzie, Clayton McKenzie, Mackenzy Dugan and wife, Kelsey, Paige Dugan and significant other, Colten Jenkins; one great-granddaughter to arrive in February; identical twin brother,Gregory McGann; former wife and mother of his children, Carol Myers; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Family and friends will be received at Durst Funeral Home, 57 Frost Avenue, Frostburg, MD, on Friday, February 6, 2026, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. The Mt. Savage Fire Dept. will hold a memorial service at 7:30 p.m., Friday evening.
Funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Saturday, February 7, 2026, at 11 a.m. with Thomas Morgan officiating.
Serving as pallbearers will be his grandsons, members of the Mt. Savage Fire Department, and members of the Fire Police.
Interment will be in Frostburg Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Durst Funeral Home to help offset the cost.
