Kenneth J. "Kenny" Harris passed away on Friday, February 24, 2023 surrounded by his family following a short stay at Sterling Care at Frostburg Village due to illness.
Kenny was born on November 27, 1939 in Frostburg where he grew up and lived his whole life. He is the son of the late Henry and Margaret (Maley) Harris.
In addition to this parents he is preceded in death by his son, Patrick Neal Harris and his sister, Margie (Harris) Cline.
He attended St. Michaels School in Frostburg and graduated from LaSalle High School in Cumberland in 1958 where he played football. After high school he received a Bachelor of Science degree in education in 1962 from the State Teachers College in Frostburg and a Masters of Education from Frostburg State College in 1970.
Kenny had a 31 year teaching career starting with five years at Grantsville Elementary School and 26 years teaching 5th and 6th grade at Mt. Savage School. He always enjoyed seeing his former students who would never hesitate to greet him when they saw their teacher and talk about fond memories they had of his classroom. In his younger years Kenny also worked for the Frostburg City Recreation Department and the A and P on Broadway. He enjoyed fishing and hunting or playing baseball and softball whenever he could find the time. Kenny was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Frostburg Elks Lodge 470 and the Sons of the American Legion where he played shuffleboard and has many trophies from those days. Later Kenny could be found in the summer playing golf with his brothers, Gene and Rick at Maplehurst Country Club or sitting with a group of friends having coffee and shooting the breeze early in the morning at McDonald's. Kenny was a very loyal family man and was always there for his children. After his son was in a car accident in 1990 which left him severely injured he retired from teaching and committed himself to his sons care until his death in 2012. Kenny will be greatly missed by his family who loved him dearly.
He was a member of Divine Mercy Parish, St. Michael's Church.
Kenny is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 61 years, Mary Alice "Mamie" (Thompson) Harris his two sons Kenneth and James and his grandson Kyle Harris; brothers, Gene (Joanne) and Rick (Mickey) Harris and his sister Joan McKinnon.
The family would like to thank the staff at Sterling Care for the kindness, attention and care he received during his time there.
Friends and family will be received at Durst Funeral Home, 57 Frost Avenue on Wednesday, March 1, 2023 from 4 to 7 PM.
Mass of Christian burial will take place on Thursday, March 2nd at 11 am at Divine Mercy Parish with Fr. Ed Hendricks as Officiant.
