70, passed away on Friday, November 3, 2017 at home with her family.  Marie demonstrated strength and dignity throughout her two and a half year illness.

Born on May 16, 1947 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of the late William and Marie (McCann) Potts.

Ms. Potts-Deakin graduated from Temple University with a Psychology degree, Frostburg State University with a Masters of Business Administration, and completed additional coursework at Syracuse University. Marie was a life long learner with a curiosity to explore and understand.

Marie effectively balanced a career and family responsibilities.  She worked in business communications for a national insurance company and at Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia. Following her relocation to Frostburg in 1978, she worked at the Cumberland Area Heath Education Center, Garrett College, and retired from Allegany College of Maryland as Director of Business and Industry.  She demonstrated a strong work ethic, excellent written and oral skills as well as a special knowledge in computer technology.

She is survived by her husband of 41 years, Spencer Deakin, two sons, Gregory Deakin of Frostburg and Andrew Deakin of Winooski, Vermont; and two daughters-in love, Tonya Deakin, and Arrity Deakin; one sister Judith Mullin of Bear, Delaware, and one brother, William Potts of Philadelphia; four grandchildren, Wyatt, Raegan, Ruby, and Sawyer Deakin; a small extended family and close special friends.

Marie had numerous passions in life, especially her love for family and her grandchildren, travel, sailing and sail racing, skiing, reading, gardening and the outdoors of western Maryland. Marie was a member of several community groups and was twice Commodore of the Deep Creek Yacht Club, Inc. Marie was also a member of Divine Mercy Parish.

Marie was cremated in accordance to her wishes.

Friends will be received at the Durst Funeral Home in Frostburg, on Monday, November 6, 2017 from 4 to 8 pm.

Funeral mass will be celebrated at Divine Mercy Parish St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Grantsville, MD on Tuesday, November 7, 2017 at 11:00 am.

The family offers special thanks to the Rev. Ed Hendricks for his spiritual support and friendship; Dr. Michael Craig, and his oncology staff at Randolph Cancer Center at Ruby Memorial Hospital for their skilled and compassionate care.

Expressions of sympathy can be directed to the charity of the donor's choice in Marie’s name.
