Shirley Cecelia Hughes

December 21, 1928 — July 11, 2022

Shirley Cecelia (Russell) Hughes, 93, of Slabtown, passed into the arms of Jesus after a brief illness on July 11, 2022, at UPMC with her daughters by her side.

Born on December 21, 1928 in Midland. She was the daughter of the late James P. Russell and Mary Catherine (Winters) Russell.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard “Huff” Hughes in 2007 having shared 62 years together.

Also preceding her in death were her sisters, Mary Louise Russell, Norma Stott, Theresa Bertolina and Brother, John “Jack” Russell.

Shirley was a member of the Mt. Savage United Methodist Church having participated in the church choir for several years. She retired from Frostburg State University as Housekeeping Manager serving over 30 years of service at age 75. She was very proud of this accomplishment.

Mom enjoyed many things. Playing Bingo with her grandson David at Midland and Shaft Fire halls, yearly trips to Ocean City with family and all other family gatherings throughout the years.

Surviving are her daughters, Mary Lee Winebrenner and husband Tom, Betty Jane Carder and husband Denny, and Ruth Ann Johnson and husband Denny; granddaughters, Christie Eichhorn and husband Alan, Cherie Lehman and husband Bruce; grandson, David Lee Beal; great granddaughters, Shayla Cecelia Emerick, Carlee Smith and husband David; great grandsons, Travis Bohn and wife Ashleigh, Levi Bohn, Tyler Beal and family; step-grandsons, Darren, Doug and Derek Johnson and their families; brother, Ronald Russell, Slabtown; sister-in-law, Shirley O. Hughes, Eckhart; brother-in-law, James Hughes and wife Toni, Michigan; special niece, Lois Russell, who called her every night and visited her on Sundays; also many more niece and nephews.

Mom loved Jesus and her family very much and she knew how much they loved her. Everyone that was lucky enough to meet Mom, loved her. No wonder she had so many friends. Our lives will not be the same without her, but Mom was struggling. Knowing there is no more pain and suffering will help us through the most difficult times ahead. Please keep our family in your prayers.

Family and friends will be received at Durst Funeral Home, 57 Frost Avenue, Frostburg, MD on Friday, July 15, 2022 from 1:00 to 3:00 P.M. Funeral service will follow at 3:00 P.M. with Pastor Kevin Blanchard officiating.
