Terry Edward, "Dr. Terry" Williams, MD, FAAFP of Cumberland passed away with his wife in attendance at UPMC Western Maryland after an extended illness.
Born, March 24, 1945, he was the only child of the late Guy E. and Arlie M. (Keller) Williams.
Dr. Williams was a 1963 graduate of Fort Hill High School where he was a member of the marching band and numerous clubs. In 1967, he graduated from the University of Maryland with a Bachelor's of Science degree. He then attended George Washington University but realized "big city" life was not for him. He transferred and later graduated from West Virginia University of Medicine in 1972.
Following his residency in Family Medicine, Dr. Williams established his family medicine practice at the Memorial Hospital & Medical Center in 1974. He continued to practice at this location until relocating to the Johnson Heights Medical Building in 2009. He retired from practice at the end of April 2023. He continued to serve as UPMC Western Maryland Home Care Medical Director until his passing.
Throughout his career he actively participated in numerous committees and held multiple leadership roles. Among these include past Vice President and President of the Memorial Hospital & Medical Center Medical Staff, Co-chair of Credentials Committee, long-standing Secretary-Treasurer of Memorial Hospital & Medical Center and later UPMC Western Maryland, and Professional Advisory Committee to Home Care.
In addition, he served the community by participating in a CAHEC Advisory Committee; performing evaluations for children seeking care at Shriner's Hospitals; conducting high school sports physicals; and serving as mentor or preceptor to many students enrolled in health care programs.
Dr. Williams was a Fellow to the American Academy of Family Practice, a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity, WVU School of Medicine Alumni Association, Colonel in the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels, National Rifle Association, Fort Hill Rifle and Pistol Club, Ali Ghan Shrine, and Scottish Rite of Free Masonry.
His many interests included golfing, sailing, trap and skeet shooting, and fly fishing in his younger days. He was an avid reader and collector of books. His special interest was history of any period. He was well versed on Napoleonic wars and Napoleon in general. Mostly he enjoyed spending quiet time at home.
Surviving is his loving wife, Susan Joyce Keister who he married October 24, 1999. Also surviving is special cousin, Jane "Jane Jane" Jenkins and her son Nicholas (Dawn). Additional survivors are brother-in-laws, William (Sandra), Kevin, and Jeffery (Loretta) Keister; nieces, Stacy (David) Shriner and Elizabeth Keister; and nephew, Nathan (Amy) Keister and their sons.
Dr. Williams was the eternal optimist. He always tried to make the best of any bad personal situation, often making a joke about it. Dr. Williams never met a stranger and would strike up a conversation with anyone anywhere anytime. He strived to see the good in everyone. He was unfazed by class or status; everyone was equal in his eyes. He adored his patients who were often greeted or left with a "Hon" or "Partner" and a hand on the shoulder or a touch of the arm. May he always be remembered for his kindness, generosity, and his adherence to the Golden Rule.
A special thank you to Dr. Williams' close friends Mr. Gary Bartik, Dr. Reed Failing, Dr. John Pappas, and Mr. Randy Shreve for all their help and support during his illness as well as the compassionate and excellent care of the tremendous staff of UPMC Western Maryland High Level Care.
Those wishing to honor Dr. Williams are asked to make a donation to Marine Toys for Tots, Shriner's Children's Hospital, Tunnel to Towers Foundation, or a charity of the donor's choice.
Per his request, Durst Funeral Home of Frostburg is entrusted to execute his final wishes. A public viewing is scheduled for Friday, October 9 2026, from 3:00 to 7:00.
