Thomas E. Durney, Sr., 86, passed away on November 18, 2015 at Frostburg Village Nursing Home.

Born in Baltimore on October 19, 1929. He is preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Lillie P. Durney; son, Wayne B. Durney, and his parents, brother, and sister-in-law.

Tom was a Chemical Engineering graduate of Johns Hopkins University and retired from Allegany Ballistics Laboratory in 1985, as well as the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Indianhead, Maryland, 1993. During his career he was involved in the design and development of several propulsion systems used for our nation’s defense. Tom returned to Western Maryland to enjoy his retirement in 1993. He was a life member of the NRA, a member of Big Savage Sportsman Club, and was active in his earlier years with Explorer Scouts, Post 42, were he taught Hunter Safety Courses. After returning to Allegany County and Frostburg, he briefly served on Frostburg’s City Board of Zoning and Appeals.

He is survived by his children, Thomas (Ted) E. Durney, Jr., Bristol, TN, E. Charles (Chuck) Durney and wife Natalie, Frostburg, Joann Durney and husband Paul Adams, Harrisburg, PA; daughter-in-law, Peggy C. Durney, LaPlata, MD; grandchildren, Jennah, Brandon, Clinton, and Jancis Durney, John (Nick) Maxim and wife Raven, Carolyn Maxim and fiancé Shaun Etherington, Eric Maxim, and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Frostburg Village Assisted Living and Nursing Facility for the care provided to Tom over the past many months.

In accordance with his wishes, he will be cremated.
