Willa Mae (Shannon) Hounshell

Willa Mae (Shannon) Hounshell, of Frostburg, Maryland, died Saturday, September 19, 2026, at the age of 97.

She was born in 1929 in Frostburg, the daughter of William Robert Shannon and Laura Roach Shannon. She married Edgar Lee Hounshell Jr., and they shared a long life together in western Maryland until his death in 2015.

Willa and Edgar both earned degrees from Frostburg State College, then a teachers college, and both made their careers in Allegany County Public Schools. She taught at Parkside Elementary in LaVale and later at Beall Elementary in Frostburg, retiring at 65.

She loved the piano, loved to dance, and loved playing golf.

She is survived by her son, Michael Drew Hounshell, and his wife, Carol, her daughter, Jaynee Lee Baird, and Jaynee's husband, Donald Baird; her granddaughter, Shannon Shelton, and Shannon's husband, Daniel Shelton; and her great-grandchildren, Parker, Lyla, and Adeline.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar Lee Hounshell Jr.; her sister Daisy; and her brother-in-law Arthur "Max" Lloyd.  

A graveside service at Frostburg Memorial Park will be held on Thursday, October 1st, at 1pm.
