Mary Whiteman

Mary C. (Porter) Whiteman, 100, went to be with the Lord on October 24, 2020 at Devlin Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation.

Born July 15, 1920 in Frostburg, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Anna B. (Cronin) Porter.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Paul W. Whiteman, her three brothers, Frances Porter, William Porter, George E. Porter, and one Aunt, Ella Cronin. She is the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Mary, a Devoted Roman Catholic, was a member of St. Mary of the Annunciation Catholic Church and the BVM Sodality in Lonaconing before it closed. Thereafter, she was a member of St. Michael’s Church, Frostburg. She was a member of the American Legion Farrady Post 24 as Auxiliary for 24 years.

Mary was formerly employed at Michael Berkowitz sewing factory in Frostburg, for a short time then moved onto the bobbin department at the AMCEL Celanese Fibers Plant for nine years.

She married Paul Whiteman on December 28, 1957. They have one daughter Peggy Ann.

She enjoyed going for long rides with her husband, brother George and daughter Peggy Ann to Johnstown and Pittsburgh, to see her relatives. She also enjoyed going to church, walking downtown to get her hair done and going shopping in her younger years.

Before her eyesight failed, she liked reading the newspaper and watching TV. Thereafter she liked having her daughter read her the newspaper and liked listening to music from her youth; Broadway show tunes and swing music were among her favorites. She resided in Lonaconing with her daughter, who cared for her in every way possible.

Surviving are her daughter Peggy Ann Whiteman and fiancé Frank Danfelt of Berkley Springs, WV, who also helped care for her. She is also survived by niece, JoAnn Cook, Ohio; nephew, Bill Porter, Pennsylvania; numerous  nieces and nephews, great nieces, great nephews and the Spates family cousins in California; Andrea Bowden of Baltimore, as well as special nephew John Ternent of Cumberland, and great niece, Amy Ternent.

Family and friends will be received at Durst Funeral Home, 57 Frost Ave, Frostburg, MD on Thursday, October 28, 2020 from 2 PM. to 4 PM.

Mask and social distancing are expected. Due to the pandemic a gathering will be held at a later date.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Michael’s Catholic Church on Friday, October 30, 2020 at 11 A.M. with Fr. Ed Hendricks Officiating. Friends and family will be received one hour prior to mass.

Her nephews will be serving as honorary pallbearers.

Internment will be in Frostburg Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to St. Michael’s Catholic Church, 44 E Main Street, Frostburg, MD 21532.

Peggy Ann would like to thank Devlin Manor staff for taking care of her mom, in the short time she was there. She also expresses appreciation for the care she received from Dr. Tan and associates, WHMS health services home care, home support of social services, Allegany HRDC and the Georges Creek Ambulance Service.  A very special thank you to her neighbors Jim, Nicole and son Laton Mayhew for all their care and help around the house.

Mary had a good sense humor and would say things to make you laugh. She always tried to help people and was happy and easy going. She will be missed by her family and friends.
